HAGERSTOWN, Md. News (10/27/2023) – After a 5-year hiatus, professional baseball is returning to Hagerstown, Maryland, with the inaugural season of the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars. The Flying Boxcars will play their first home game on Friday, May 3, 2024, at the newly constructed Downtown Hagerstown Ballpark.

The Flying Boxcars are a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB), an independent baseball league that has produced over 1,000 Major League Baseball players since its inception in 1998. The ALPB is known for its high level of play and its commitment to affordable, family-friendly entertainment.

The Flying Boxcars’ name pays homage to Hagerstown’s aviation heritage. Fairchild Aircraft, which once employed thousands of Hagerstown residents, produced the C-82 and C-119 cargo planes, which were nicknamed “Flying Boxcars.”

The Flying Boxcars are locally owned by Downtown Baseball, LLC, consisting of Howard “Blackie” Bowen (President), Don Bowman, James Holzapfel, and Frank Boulton.

The team is managed by David Blenckstone, who has over tremendous experience as a professional baseball player and coach. Blenckstone was general manager of the Hagerstown Suns from 1996 to 2001, and athletic director of St. Maria Goretti Catholic High School for 13 years.

The Flying Boxcars are excited to return professional baseball to Hagerstown and to become a part of the community. The team is looking forward to welcoming fans to Downtown Hagerstown Ballpark for the first home game on May 3, 2024.

The full schedule for this upcoming season is available at the Flying Boxcars website.
