WILLIAMSPORT, MD News (9/12/2023) – In an effort to maintain transparency and ensure the safety of its students and staff, Washington County Public Schools has issued a statement regarding an incident that occurred on September 12, 2023, at Williamsport High School. The incident, which involved a threatening statement allegedly made by a student, led to precautionary measures being taken by school administrators.

The incident unfolded shortly after student dismissal when school administrators were alerted to the potentially concerning statement. Out of an abundance of caution, and in line with established safety protocols, students who were participating in athletic events outside the school premises were immediately brought indoors. Law enforcement and school officials promptly began an investigation to assess the credibility of the threat.

While the investigation is ongoing, preliminary findings suggest that there may not be a credible threat to the school or its students. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of vigilance when it comes to school safety and security. This vigilance is not limited to regular school hours but extends to school events and extracurricular activities as well.

School officials are using this incident as an opportunity to reinforce the importance of students and the broader school community being proactive in identifying and reporting potential threats. Parents and guardians are encouraged to remind their children that if they ever come across or overhear something that raises concerns about a potential problem at school or during school events, they should immediately report it to school staff or law enforcement.

Washington County Public Schools did not further elaborate on the nature of the threat.
