Smithsburg, MD News (7/22/2023) – The landscape design proposal for Veterans Park in Smithsburg, Maryland has been unveiled, showcasing a collaborative effort between the Smithsburg Parks Commission and landscape designer Colleen Corballis. The plan aims to provide an aesthetically pleasing environment while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding area and offering a unique park experience for the community of Smithsburg. The landscape design plan is a general plan defining the overall concept for each zone, allowing flexibility in developing each zone with a specific goal in mind.

The plan was developed in response to resident survey feedback, so that it would resonate well with the community. Here is an overview of the key elements and design principles incorporated into the plan.

Zones: The plan identifies and defines specific zones within the park, including areas for recreation, entertainment, relaxation, and circulation. This careful delineation ensures an efficient use of space while fulfilling the intended purposes.

Hardscape Elements: The design plan incorporates various hardscape elements such as paths, viewing decks, and water features. These additions complement the natural elements of the park and add structure to the space.

Sustainability and Environmental Considerations: The landscape design plan places a strong emphasis on sustainability. It includes strategies such as the use of native or low-maintenance plant species to minimize environmental impact and promote long-term sustainability.

Bio-retention Areas: The plan proposes the integration of bio-retention areas within the park. These areas serve multiple purposes, including water quality control, landscape diversity, and cost savings. They filter and treat stormwater runoff, improving water resources and protecting the environment. Additionally, bio-retention areas reduce the need for expensive storm drainage infrastructure, resulting in significant cost savings.

Splash Pad and Natural Unstructured Playscape: The plan includes the addition of a splash pad and natural playscape for children. These features provide opportunities for physical challenges, motor skills development, cognitive stimulation, and creative play. The incorporation of natural elements such as river birch trees and soft, shedding branches adds seasonal interest and interactive elements for children.

Grand Promenade: The design plan introduces a tree-lined promenade or “Alle'” between the two pavilions and sports fields. This promenade creates a shaded walkway, connecting various areas of the park and offering views of the surrounding landscape.

Snallygaster Woods: The wooded area east of the library will be transformed into a unique natural play area. The plan includes the restoration of the woods, removal of invasive species, and the incorporation of natural play structures. This area will provide opportunities for special events, themed trails, and educational activities.

Garden Reading Rooms: Outdoor garden rooms will be created on the west side of the library, offering an extension for reading, writing, small groups, and quiet reflection. These spaces will be enclosed by vegetation, providing an inviting and flexible setting that connects literature and knowledge with the beauty of the outdoors.

Dappled Shade Informal Picnic Area: A new picnic area will be established on the west side of the gazebo, featuring widely spaced trees that provide dappled shade. This informal space will offer opportunities for picnics, relaxation, and temporary installations, such as hammocks and outdoor artwork.

Great Meadow: The back edge of the park will be transformed into a dynamic meadow, featuring a mix of short and tall grass areas and wildflowers. This meadow will require minimal maintenance and provide habitat for pollinators, supporting biodiversity and enhancing the overall well-being of the community.

Evergreen Forest: Along the edge of the park near Cave Hill Road, an evergreen forest will be established. The forest will provide shelter, shade, and a diverse ecosystem, offering park users a chance to explore a different environment and engage in educational activities.

Dog Park: A small dog park will be created across from the maintenance area, offering a dedicated space for dogs to socialize and exercise. The park will include amenities such as benches, water stations, and waste disposal facilities.

Gazebo and Photo Garden: The gazebo will be surrounded by a colorful perennial garden, providing a picturesque backdrop for photographs and enhancing the overall aesthetics of the area. This garden will feature a variety of plantings with year-round seasonal interest.

Library Garden and Pond: In front of the library, the existing stormwater retention feature will be transformed into a bioswale and stormwater pond. This addition will enhance the park’s beauty, provide a habitat for wildlife, and offer opportunities for educational activities.

The landscape design plan for Veterans Park in Smithsburg demonstrates the town’s commitment to creating an inviting and sustainable outdoor space that honors veterans while providing recreational and educational opportunities for the entire community. With its diverse range of zones, natural elements, and thoughtful design considerations, the proposed improvements promise to transform Veterans Park into a one-of-a-kind destination in Smithsburg.

The initial concept was approved by the town council in a 3-to-2 vote at the July 11, 2023 council meeting, providing permission for the Parks Commission to proceed with planning for the next phase, which is to develop a more comprehensive plan for the park based upon the preliminary concept. The comprehensive plan, once developed and approved, will likely take ten years for phased implementation.
