BRUNSWICK, MD News (9/18/2022) – A hazmat leak at the Brunswick CSX Rail Yard will mean shutdown of most of the area, including the C&O Canal. At least one person has been transported to Meritus Medical Center, and multiple units are responding to secure the area. Residents should avoid the MARC Train station and east rail yard area at this time.

This is an evolving incident and more information will be posted as it becomes available.

Emergency services are currently reaching out to CSX to request all rail traffic be stopped until the situation is resolved.

The nearby campground will be required to shelter-in-place.

Update 8:37 PM – According to information on The Frederick Scanner, this is still an active incident. A rail car 2 miles east is leaking Hydrogen Chloride, and there is no threat to the town of Brunswick at this time.

Update 10:11 PM – Brunswick City Police have notified MARC Train that there is still police and fire activity in the Brunswick MARC station parking lot. Authorities are working to address the situation as quickly and safely as possible, but there is a possibility that the MARC Train parking lot will not be available to passengers on Monday morning. Passengers that normally board at Brunswick should plan to allow extra time to drive to Point of Rocks station, where there is ample available parking.

Update 4:12 AM – Brunswick City Police have notified MARC Train that the Brunswick Station parking lot will not be affected by any police activity this morning and is available for MARC train passenger parking as normal.
