Baltimore residents are being encouraged to prioritize home fire safety as the holiday season approaches, a period when home fires typically see a significant increase. The Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD) and the Red Cross of Central Maryland have initiated a new campaign designed to educate the public on preventative measures during this critical time of year. The initiative includes a series of social media videos and a live demonstration event aimed at reducing the risk of fires and ensuring families are prepared in the event of an emergency.
The partnership between the BCFD and the Red Cross highlights that the months of November and December represent a peak time for home fires. As colder weather sets in, the use of heating equipment and increased cooking activity contribute to a rise in fire incidents. Data from the Red Cross indicates that one in five individuals they assist following a home fire do so during these holiday months. Last year, disaster response teams from the Red Cross of Central Maryland aided hundreds of local residents who were affected by nearly 100 home fires within November and December alone, underscoring the heightened risk.

To address these concerns, the campaign features a video series offering practical home fire safety advice in an accessible format. The initial video in this four-part series is now available on social media platforms. The BCFD and Red Cross of Central Maryland plan to release one new video weekly throughout November, disseminating crucial safety information. The campaign will culminate on November 23rd with a live home fire safety demonstration and a media event hosted at the Baltimore City Fire Department Training Academy, providing an opportunity for hands-on learning and further public engagement.
The campaign emphasizes that while home fires are a frequent disaster nationwide, simple preventative actions can significantly enhance safety and save lives. The video series is set to cover essential tips such as regularly changing smoke alarm batteries, maintaining a safe distance between space heaters and flammable materials like furniture and curtains, and avoiding the overloading of extension cords. These straightforward measures are critical for preventing fires during a time when homes are often more occupied and activity levels increase.
The Red Cross of Central Maryland, which provides free disaster assistance funded by donations, urges those in need to call 1-800-RED CROSS to connect with their volunteer disaster response team. Nationally, the Red Cross observes a nearly 20% increase in home fire responses during November and December compared to other times of the year, assisting an average of 40,000 people during these two months. Residents are reminded that with increased cooking, heating, and holiday decorating, it is particularly important to test smoke alarms and practice home fire escape plans. Resources for learning more about preventing fires, creating escape plans, and recovering from fires are available through the Red Cross.
