The City of Hagerstown is inviting public engagement as its newly formed Charter Review Committee begins its work. The committee’s inaugural meeting is scheduled for October 12, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. in the Hub City Boardroom on the first floor of City Hall. This gathering marks the official commencement of a process aimed at examining and potentially updating the foundational document that governs the city.
During this initial session, members of the Charter Review Committee will formally take their oaths of office, signifying their commitment to the review process. Following this ceremonial step, the committee will officially call to order and proceed with the important task of appointing a chairperson to lead their discussions and deliberations. The selection of a leader will set the tone and direction for the committee’s future meetings and efforts to modernize the city’s governing framework.

A significant portion of the first meeting will be dedicated to providing an overview of the current City Charter and relevant state laws. This foundational understanding is crucial for committee members as they begin to identify areas for potential revision. Understanding the existing framework, alongside current legal requirements, will allow the committee to make informed decisions about proposed changes and their potential impact on city operations and governance.
Following the review of the current charter and state law, the committee will establish its meeting schedule. This will provide a roadmap for their ongoing work, outlining the frequency and timing of future sessions where in-depth discussions and proposals will be developed. Residents interested in the future of Hagerstown’s governance are encouraged to note these dates as the committee progresses through its review.
