For years, Radio Free Hub City has operated on a commitment to provide transparent, fact-based, primary-source journalism without locking our articles behind expensive paywalls. We believe our community deserves access to public information without barriers.
However, producing thorough, investigative reporting, analyzing government compliance, tracking municipal spending, and sifting through public records, takes substantial time and resources. Unfortunately, the goodwill that has kept our in-depth reporting completely free is increasingly being exploited. From third-party organizations like Indivisible copying our full articles into private groups, depriving our site of the ad revenue needed just to break even, to content scrapers grabbing our and others’ content then running it through AI and claiming it as their own, these actions have made maintaining open access for high-effort reporting financially unsustainable.
To protect our site’s independence, secure our operations, and ensure we can continue serving Hagerstown and the surrounding region, we are introducing a new supporter model for select in-depth investigative coverage and detailed analyses.
In addition to this new supporter model, effective immediately, Radio Free Hub City is updating our supporter subscription rate to $10/month for all new members to directly sustain our in-depth, primary-source investigative reporting against ongoing content theft and rising operating costs. To honor those who have stood by our mission from the beginning, all existing subscribers are fully grandfathered in and will keep their original $5/month (or $50/year) rate for as long as their account remains in good standing. If you’ve already been supporting our independent newsroom, nothing changes for you—your early commitment is locked in, and we thank you for making our work possible.
What this means for you:
- Standard news, daily community updates, press releases, and event announcements will remain FREE to everyone. A free account may be required for some articles.
- In-depth investigative reports, detailed policy breakdowns, and exclusive analysis will require a supporter subscription.
- Existing paid supporters keep their current monthly/yearly rate for as long as they remain in good standing
