Maryland AG Announces Court Ruling Allowing Congressional Redistricting Amendment on November Ballot

The Supreme Court of Maryland has ruled that a proposed constitutional amendment concerning congressional redistricting, identified as Question 3, will appear on the November ballot. The court’s decision allows for the amendment to be presented to voters, albeit with revised ballot language. This development follows a legal challenge to the amendment’s inclusion.

The Office of the Attorney General played a key role in defending the amendment, which had previously received approval from the General Assembly. As Maryland’s chief legal officer, Attorney General Anthony G. Brown emphasized his office’s duty to uphold the constitutionality and legal adequacy of legislative actions when they face judicial scrutiny. The legal team’s efforts were highlighted for their skill and professionalism in this defense.

“I commend the attorneys and staff of the Office of the Attorney General who successfully defended the constitutional amendment approved by the General Assembly. As Maryland’s chief legal officer, I have a responsibility to defend the constitutionality and legal sufficiency of measures enacted or approved by the General Assembly when they are challenged in court, and our team carried out that responsibility with skill and professionalism,” said Brown. “With today’s ruling, the question will remain on the ballot, and Maryland voters will have the opportunity to decide the matter for themselves in November.”
