Martinsburg Grapples with Historic Rainfall and Widespread Flooding

The City of Martinsburg is actively engaged in recovery efforts following a severe rain event that inundated the community with an estimated five inches of precipitation in a short period, an occurrence characterized by NOAA as potentially a 1-in-1,000-year rainfall event. The deluge presented significant challenges to the city’s infrastructure, despite continuous operation of essential services.

Throughout the storm, city crews worked diligently to maintain services, address flooding concerns, and manage a multitude of storm-related issues. While the city’s water treatment facilities remained operational without interruption, the unprecedented volume of stormwater overwhelmed various infrastructure systems. The Wastewater Treatment Plant continues to operate, however, it is experiencing elevated flow rates due to surface water infiltration. Between 4:45 PM and 7:00 PM, the city responded to approximately 177 calls for service related to the storm.

The immediate focus has now transitioned from emergency response to cleanup and restoration. City crews are currently engaged in removing fallen trees, clearing roadways, and assessing damage to municipal infrastructure. Residents and businesses that experienced flooding are advised to place flood-damaged materials, such as furniture, carpeting, drywall, and appliances, at the curb for collection by the city’s Sanitation Department. To facilitate efficient debris removal, vegetative debris, including trees, limbs, and brush, should be separated from other flood-damaged items and also placed at the curb. For safety reasons, residents are asked to avoid placing any debris directly in the street. City crews will continue their work in the coming days to clear debris, evaluate the extent of the damage, and work towards restoring normal operations. The city acknowledges and appreciates the patience, cooperation, and resilience demonstrated by its residents and the business community during this challenging time.
