Maryland State Police Aviation Unit Conducts Dramatic Aerial Rescue in Virginia

Maryland State Police Aviation Command has successfully executed an aerial hoist rescue for an individual injured in a utility task vehicle (UTV) accident in a remote area of Frederick County, Virginia. The operation, which occurred on Saturday, highlighted the critical role of the Maryland State Police Aviation Command in providing specialized rescue services, even outside of Maryland’s borders.

The incident unfolded around 2:21 p.m. when rescue personnel were dispatched to a trail near Cove Campground following a UTV rollover. Due to the challenging and secluded location, the extensive extrication time anticipated, and the severity of the rider’s injuries, the Maryland State Police Aviation Command was requested for an aerial hoist rescue. Trooper 5, a Maryland State Police helicopter stationed in Cumberland, Maryland, was dispatched to the scene.

Ground-based emergency medical services and rescue crews provided immediate patient care and assisted in preparing the injured individual for extraction. A Trooper and Rescue Technician was lowered from the helicopter into a small clearing within the wooded area. The patient was then secured for aerial extraction using a specialized Patient Extrication Platform, commonly known as a PEP Bag. While the Trooper 5 helicopter maintained a steady hover, the patient was successfully hoisted up into the aircraft. Following the rescue, the flight crew transitioned to their medical evacuation role, transporting the victim directly to a local hospital for necessary treatment. The AgustaWestland AW-139 helicopter was utilized for this critical mission.

The Maryland State Police Aviation Command, in operation since 1970, maintains a fleet of ten AW139 helicopters. These aircraft are strategically based across seven locations within Maryland, ensuring round-the-clock coverage for residents and visitors. The command’s diverse mission set includes medical evacuations, law enforcement support, search and rescue operations, homeland security, and disaster assessment. The effectiveness of these missions is significantly bolstered by the strong collaborative relationships between the Aviation Command and local fire departments, rescue squads, EMS providers, law enforcement agencies, and other partner organizations.
