Ohio Man Pleads Guilty to Fentanyl Distribution Near West Virginia Playground

A Canton, Ohio man has pleaded guilty to possessing a significant quantity of fentanyl intended for distribution, a crime that occurred in close proximity to a public playground in Ohio County, West Virginia. U.S. Attorney Matthew L. Harvey announced the conviction, which is part of a larger federal effort to combat drug trafficking in the region.

Jaylen Jawaun Lashawn Martin, 29, also known by the alias “Money,” entered a guilty plea to one count of possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl. Critically, the offense occurred within 1,000 feet of a protected location, specifically the Overbrook Playground in Wheeling, West Virginia. Court proceedings revealed that Martin was staying at a local hotel while under investigation for drug-related activities. Law enforcement observed Martin as he exited a vehicle and entered his hotel room. Following his arrest, a search of the vehicle yielded a shopping bag containing nearly 72 grams of fentanyl, along with drug paraphernalia, indicating the intent to distribute the dangerous substance.

The potential consequences for Martin are severe. He faces a mandatory minimum prison sentence of five years, with a maximum possibility of up to 80 years in federal prison. The final determination of his sentence will be made by a federal district court judge, who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant statutory factors. Assistant U.S. Attorney Clayton Reid is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government, with investigative support provided by the Ohio Valley Drug Task Force, an initiative funded by the HIDTA program, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, has been identified as a substance of extreme lethality, posing a grave threat to public safety even in minimal amounts. Its designation as a weapon of mass destruction by President Donald Trump reflects the severity of the crisis it represents. This conviction is a component of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide endeavor aimed at dismantling drug cartels and transnational criminal organizations, protecting citizens from violent crime perpetrators, and addressing illegal immigration. U.S. Magistrate Judge James P. Mazzone presided over the proceedings.
