Franklin County to Conduct Mosquito Spraying in Greene Township Due to West Nile Virus Concerns

Franklin County, Pennsylvania, has announced plans to conduct an adult mosquito spraying operation in specific residential and recreational areas of Greene Township on August 4th. The spraying is being implemented as a measure to control mosquito populations that have shown high levels of West Nile virus. The operation will commence around sunset and may extend to the following evening if weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances necessitate a delay.

The areas targeted for spraying include, but are not limited to, the Menno Haven Community, Cornertown Road, Hafer Road, Apple Blossom Court, Cresthaven Drive, North Blackberry Lane, Smoketown Road, and the Luther Ridge Community. While the listed roads provide a reference for residents, it is important to note that spraying may extend to other nearby roads and adjacent areas. Residents are advised that the schedule for this mosquito control effort is subject to change due to weather and other potential disruptions, with a contingency date of August 5th set for rescheduling if needed.

This mosquito control operation will utilize a truck-mounted ultra-low volume (ULV) spraying method, conducted by Franklin County’s Mosquito-Borne Disease Program. The specialized product, PermaSease 4-4, will be applied at a rate of one ounce per acre. This formulation is designed for rapid reduction of adult mosquito populations and is applied after sunset. This timing is intended to minimize exposure to non-target species, such as bees. Franklin County staff have a policy to momentarily halt the spraying process when residents are observed to be outdoors during the application. However, for maximum effectiveness in reducing mosquito numbers and the risk of West Nile virus, residents are encouraged to remain indoors while the spraying is actively occurring in their neighborhoods.

To mitigate the risk of mosquito bites and potential West Nile virus transmission, Franklin County residents are urged to take personal protective measures. This includes wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors and utilizing insect repellent. Additionally, vigilance in eliminating standing water is crucial. Residents are advised to inspect and empty artificial containers that can collect water, such as buckets, clogged gutters, tarps, and old tires, as even small amounts of water, equivalent to a soda bottle cap, can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
