Franklin County Commissioners have announced the recipients of the county’s final nursing scholarship program, awarding six local high school graduates with $2,500 each to support their pursuit of nursing careers. This marks the culmination of a decade-long initiative that has provided crucial financial assistance to aspiring nurses in the region.
The six students selected for the 2026 scholarship are Makenzie Brinkman, Tara Brown, Kinzee Hudson, Madelyn Koons, Mariska Neff, and Ava Zeigler. These individuals, all graduates of area high schools including Chambersburg Area Career Magnet School, Chambersburg Area Senior High School, and Greencastle-Antrim High School, will be continuing their education at various institutions such as Wilson College, Messiah University, University of North Carolina Wilmington, Duquesne University, and Bloomsburg Campus Commonwealth University. The scholarships are intended to be a one-time award, contributing to their undergraduate nursing studies.

The Franklin County nursing scholarship program was established in 2017, utilizing funds derived from the sale of the county nursing home. Over its ten-year run, the program has disbursed over $148,000 to a total of 60 students. The selection process for this year’s recipients involved a comprehensive review of applications, which included essays detailing short and long-term career goals, academic transcripts, letters of reference, and demonstrated financial need. Applicants were also required to meet a minimum GPA and show active participation in extracurricular and community service activities.
The initiative aimed to address a persistent need for qualified nurses within the region. By providing financial support, the county hoped to encourage students to enter the nursing profession and potentially return to serve their local communities after completing their training. The selection committee for this year’s awards included Monica Diehl, chief nursing officer at Keystone Health, and Jill Harshman, vice president and chief nursing officer at WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, who collaborated with the Franklin County Human Resources department. A total of twelve students applied for the final round of scholarships.
