Cascade, MD – A significant milestone is being marked at Historic Fort Ritchie as the property celebrates its 100th anniversary, coinciding with a period of extensive revitalization. The former military installation, established in 1926 as a National Guard Training Camp, has seen a remarkable transformation in recent years. Following its closure in 1998 under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, the property lay dormant for years. However, since its acquisition in 2021 by Ritchie Revival, Fort Ritchie is now bustling with new life, featuring a growing number of homes and businesses.

The resurgence of Fort Ritchie is highlighted by the opening of various establishments, ranging from retail shops and eateries to service providers and manufacturing operations. Businesses like Ritchie Rations, a convenience store offering locally sourced organic produce and feed, and The Greenhouse Café, a popular spot for drinks and light meals, are serving the community. The Nisei Gallery, dedicated to preserving “The Nisei Mural” and showcasing local artists, has also opened its doors, as has Mountain Top Ice Cream Shop. Health and wellness are represented by Apotheke DuJardin, a lifestyle brand focusing on holistic products, and Meritus Health, a primary care practice.
Further contributing to the fort’s renewed vibrancy are service-oriented businesses. Spa Synergy houses multiple women-owned businesses offering a variety of salon and spa treatments. Mystical Paws Pet Grooming provides services for cats, dogs, and other small animals. For automotive needs, Harman Automotive and Harshman Automotive offers comprehensive repair services and automotive parts manufacturing, respectively, with the latter expanding its reach nationally and internationally. The Fort Ritchie Community Center provides a fitness center, gymnasium, and hosts various community programs and events.
The historical significance of the site is being preserved and shared through the Ritchie History Museum, which opened its doors to commemorate the fort’s past, including its role during World War II as a training ground for intelligence and psychological warfare specialists, often referred to as the “Ritchie Boys.” Lakeside Hall, originally the officers’ club built in 1933, has been restored and is now available as an event space overlooking Lake Royer. In recognition of the centennial, the Ritchie History Museum conducted a ceremony to bury a time capsule, scheduled to be reopened in 2076, marking another 50 years of the fort’s ongoing narrative.
