New museum in Cascade, Maryland set to educate and honor veterans, preserve history, and revitalize the community

Cascade, Maryland News (6/1/2023) – The much-anticipated grand opening of the Ritchie History Museum is set to take place on June 9th, 2023, marking a significant milestone in preserving the legacy of Fort Ritchie and honoring the contributions of its veterans. The museum, located in the heart of Cascade, aims to educate the public about the historical significance of the fort and its impact on the local community and the nation.

With the former library building dedicated to exhibits, research, and educational programs, the Ritchie History Museum will provide visitors with an immersive journey through time. Its mission to thank and honor veterans of all U.S. wars, with a special emphasis on World War II, shines through in its thoughtfully curated displays and engaging interactive experiences.

“This museum is something that the community has wanted for decades and we are so immeasurably pleased to be able to offer a glimpse into the importance of Fort Ritchie and its remarkable veterans,” said Landon Grove, director and curator of the museum. “We are indebted to our many wonderful partners, donors, and representatives who have made this possible.”

The grand opening ceremony will commence at 12:30 p.m. on June 9th.

Visitors to the museum will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of exhibits, showcasing artifacts, photographs, and personal accounts that vividly depict life at Fort Ritchie during its operational years. From the stories of the “Ritchie Boys” intelligence unit to the stories of locals who contributed to the war effort on the home front, the museum offers a comprehensive understanding of the fort’s role in Maryland’s history and its impact on World War II. The museum also plans to include exhibits on the Korean War, so that the “Forgotten War” is no longer forgotten.

The museum’s opening comes at a time when interest in the stories of the Ritchie Boys has reached new heights, thanks in part to a widely acclaimed 60 Minutes program and a 2004 documentary. The establishment of the museum is expected to further ignite public interest and serve as a catalyst for the revitalization of the Cascade community.
