Maryland has successfully recovered the entirety of approximately $188 million in federal COVID-era relief funding designated for its schools, according to a statement from Attorney General Anthony G. Brown. This substantial sum was initially awarded to schools but was subsequently targeted for withholding by a previous federal administration. The Maryland State Department of Education recently received the final $87 million installment, marking the complete retrieval of these critical educational resources.
The situation began in March 2025 when the Secretary of Education reportedly ceased states’ access to COVID-era relief funds that had already been allocated to their respective school systems. In response, Maryland, alongside a coalition of states spearheaded by New York, initiated legal action, filing a lawsuit in federal court. The court ultimately ruled in favor of the states, mandating the federal government to release the withheld funds. Maryland schools had previously received an initial disbursement of 101 million in December 2025. Following additional delays attributed to the federal government, the remaining 87 million was finally disbursed on June 1, thereby finalizing Maryland’s successful recovery of the entire $188 million.

The recovered funds are intended to address the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on students and classrooms across Maryland.
