BALTIMORE, MD – Mayor Brandon M. Scott and the Baltimore City Council have initiated legal action against the Baltimore-based Agora Companies, LLC, alleging widespread violations of the city’s Consumer Protection Ordinance. The lawsuit, filed in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City, claims that Agora’s extensive online marketing campaigns have defrauded customers, with a particular focus on seniors, of their savings through deceptive practices related to health supplements, financial advice, and publications.

The complaint outlines a pattern of alleged exploitation by Agora, a company reportedly generating hundreds of millions of dollars annually. While presenting itself externally as a publisher focusing on health, finance, and retirement, the lawsuit contends that Agora uses these themes to lure consumers into its schemes. The company is accused of employing unfair and deceptive advertising to attract its target audience, subsequently using illegal tactics to trap and retain customers. This legal challenge seeks to impose civil penalties, halt the alleged unlawful conduct through injunctive relief, secure restitution for those affected, and recover profits gained through these alleged illicit means.
Agora, through its network of affiliated entities, is reported to produce and market over 300 publications each year. The lawsuit details numerous advertisements disseminated across various web platforms, which purportedly contained false promises. These alleged misrepresentations include claims about financial windfalls, revolutionary cancer treatments with no side effects, and health supplements capable of significant fat reduction. The complaint further alleges that Agora begins by offering consumers lower-priced subscriptions with assurances of refunds, only to then upsell them to more expensive products with difficult cancellation processes. The family of one elderly consumer reportedly spent over $30,000 on Agora products within a two-year period. The legal team involved has reviewed over one thousand consumer complaints against Agora and its various corporate entities. Each false, misleading, or unsubstantiated statement in Agora’s advertisements is considered a separate violation of Baltimore’s consumer protection statute under the law.
Despite previous efforts by federal, state, and international regulatory bodies, including the Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, state Attorneys General, and the Australian Securities & Investment Commission, to curb Agora’s marketing practices, the company’s alleged predatory activities are said to have continued. The lawsuit aims to permanently put an end to these unlawful advertising and marketing strategies. In addition to The Agora Companies, LLC, the lawsuit names several other entities and individuals, including 14 W Administrative Services, LLC; Monument & Cathedral Holdings, LLC; NewMarket Health Publishing, LLC; NewMarket Health Products, LLC; MarketWise, Inc.; Paradigm Press, LLC; Oxford Financial Publishing, LLC; 546869 Holdings, LLC, doing business as Angel Publishing, LLC; Jules Bonner, President and Chairman of the Board of The Agora Companies; Erika Nolan, Chief Executive Officer of The Agora Companies; Allan Spreen, Chief Medical Advisor for Health Sciences Institute; Fred Pescatore, Editor of Logical Health Alternatives; Alan Ingis, Editor of Nutrition & Healing and Health e-Tips; Richard Gerhauser, Editor of Natural Health Response; Scott Olson, Editor of Living Well Daily; Alexander Green, Chief Investment Strategist at The Oxford Club and Editor of The Oxford Communiqué; Jim Rickards, Editor of Strategic Intelligence, Strategic Intelligence Pro, Insider Intel, Crisis Trader, and The Situation Report; and James Altucher, Editor of Altucher’s Investment Network, Altucher’s Investment Network Pro, Early Stage Crypto Investor, and Altucher’s True Alpha. The legal team leading this action includes members from the Baltimore City Law Department, as well as outside counsel from Farra & Wang PLLC and Relman Colfax PLLC.
