According to a recent announcement from the City of Baltimore, the city has experienced a notable decline in homicides and non-fatal shootings as of May 2026. The city’s public safety efforts are attributed to a collaborative approach involving various city agencies and community partners. These initiatives focus on data-driven solutions aimed at addressing the root causes of violence. The Group Violence Reduction Strategy (GVRS), a key partnership between the Baltimore Police Department, the Mayor’s Office, and prosecutors, is a central component of these efforts. GVRS concentrates on high-risk individuals and social networks believed to be responsible for a substantial portion of the city’s violence. The strategy aims to encourage individuals to disengage from violent activities and seek supportive services. Since its inception in the Western District of the Baltimore Police Department in 2022, GVRS has facilitated over 649 arrests and connected more than 384 individuals with life coaching and wraparound services through partnerships with YAP, Inc. and Roca.
In addition to the decline in shootings and homicides, other crime categories have also seen reductions. As of May 30, 2026, Baltimore Police Department officers have seized over 850 firearms this year, including 88 ghost guns, and have made 535 gun-related arrests. Carjackings have decreased by 45% compared to the previous year, while burglaries are down 16%. Auto theft has seen a 7% decrease, and total robberies have declined by 14%. These statistics reflect a broader trend of improving public safety conditions across the city.
