Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is initiating a voluntary safety recall for certain 2019-2023 model year Jeep Cherokee vehicles due to a potential defect in the two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). This issue could lead to an unexpected and unrecoverable loss of motive power while driving or the vehicle rolling while in PARK, posing a significant safety risk. The recall encompasses 61,711 vehicles manufactured between December 12, 2018, and February 24, 2023.
The defect arises from a PTU that may fail internally. Such a failure could result in a sudden loss of propulsion at any speed, potentially causing a vehicle crash without warning. Furthermore, if the vehicle rolls while in PARK, it could lead to a crash and pose a risk of injury to individuals outside the vehicle. While a “Service 4WD” message may appear on the dashboard, accompanied by noise, vibration, or changes in drive quality, these warnings may not always precede a complete loss of motive power.

The affected PTU assemblies were manufactured by DAUCH CORPORATION. This recall is part of a series of investigations and previous recalls related to potential PTU failures in Jeep Cherokees, dating back to 2020. Chrysler has been in communication with various safety agencies, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Transport Canada, regarding these issues. As of April 22, 2026, Chrysler is aware of 9 customer assistance records, 387 warranty claims, 5 field reports, and 16 other service records potentially related to this issue. The manufacturer has also indicated awareness of one accident and one injury potentially linked to this defect across all markets.
The remedy for this recall is currently under development. Chrysler will notify dealers on or about May 14, 2026, and owners will begin to be notified around June 25, 2026. A phased recall is planned for the remedy implementation. Owners will be able to check if their vehicle is affected by searching their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) starting May 14, 2026. Chrysler has stated that a general reimbursement plan is on file for any owners who may have incurred costs related to this issue prior to the recall. Drivers are advised not to park their affected vehicles indoors and to utilize the PARK function with caution until the remedy is available.
