A fire that erupted early on April 25, 2026, at a residence on Weller Road in Hancock, Washington County, has resulted in significant property damage and displaced nine individuals. According to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the blaze occurred at approximately 1:57 AM at the two-story wood-framed single-family dwelling located at 14838 Weller Road. The estimated financial loss due to the fire is substantial, with $700,000 in damages to the structure and an additional $200,000 in damages to its contents.

The initial response to the fire was led by the Hancock Volunteer Fire Department, with multiple alarms bringing the total number of firefighters to 35. The fire was brought under control within 35 minutes of its escalation. While the structure was equipped with smoke alarms, their activation status at the time of the incident is currently unknown. The property did not have a fire alarm or sprinkler system. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported as a result of the incident. The owner discovered the fire, and the preliminary cause and area of origin are still under active investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The family affected by the fire is receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. The Office of the State Fire Marshal, an agency of the Department of State Police, is committed to public safety through education, inspection, investigation, and fire protection engineering.
