Franklin County is served by seven public libraries, with six operating under the Franklin County Library System. These institutions are part of a vast network of nearly 125,000 libraries in the United States, encompassing public, school, academic, and specialized libraries. Beyond traditional book lending, Franklin County libraries have expanded their offerings to include e-books, audiobooks, and DVDs, catering to diverse reading preferences. Patrons can also access computers, the internet, and digital technologies, alongside a variety of enrichment activities and classes designed for all ages and interests. For those unable to visit a physical branch, bookmobile services bring library materials directly to residents.
The 2026 National Library Week theme, “Find Your Joy,” serves as an invitation for individuals to discover their passions, foster creativity, and strengthen community connections through their local libraries. Last year, the Franklin County Library System reported significant engagement, with 215,724 individuals utilizing its facilities and bookmobiles. Key statistics from 2025 reveal the extensive use of library services: 238,841 physical books were borrowed, and 73,504 e-content items were accessed. Children’s borrowing alone accounted for 142,265 items. The system maintained a strong user base with 18,232 active cardholders, including 4,069 who opted for e-cards. Additionally, 2,672 physical library cards were issued, alongside 1,377 new e-cards. Commissioners are encouraging all residents, regardless of age, to explore the lifelong learning and enrichment opportunities available at their local libraries during this dedicated week and beyond.
Beyond the services provided by the libraries, Patriot Federal Credit Union has contributed $4,000 to the library system’s 2026 fundraising campaign. This financial support will aid the libraries in continuing to offer and expand their valuable programs and resources for the community.
