Key revisions in the amended document address requirements for alternative energy sources, specifically solar and nuclear power. The updated ordinance also includes a new stipulation concerning the impact of data center operations on agricultural irrigation systems, a crucial concern for the county’s farming communities. Furthermore, modifications have been made to the financial security requirements for the eventual decommissioning of data centers, ensuring a plan is in place for their closure.
Residents of Franklin County can access the revised amendment for review through several channels. It is available online on the official county website, http://www.franklincountypa.gov, at the commissioners’ office, and at the Franklin County Law Library. The county is encouraging public engagement, with a public hearing scheduled for April 28 at 6 p.m. in the Franklin County Administration Building. For those unable to attend in person, the hearing will be live-streamed on the county’s YouTube channel. Written feedback can also be submitted via the county’s public comment form.
The commissioners emphasize that the amended ordinance is designed to implement safeguards aimed at mitigating any potential negative consequences associated with data center development. This initiative aligns with the commissioners’ broader goals of promoting smart growth, preserving the county’s natural resources and valuable farmland, and protecting the health, safety, and welfare of its residents, while also maintaining the established character of local communities. The ordinance specifies clear criteria intended to prevent significant adverse impacts on farmland, natural resources, and other sensitive areas.
The Franklin County Commissioners are expected to vote on the proposed amendment at their public meeting on May 20. This meeting will commence at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at the county’s administration building. Residents will have the opportunity to witness the final decision-making process on this significant land use regulation.
