The Maryland State Department of Education plans to recruit, train, and deploy 52 school-based literacy coaches, five regional literacy coaches, and four regional mathematics coaches. These professionals will begin their work with local school systems this fall. A substantial portion of these new hires, 35 literacy coaches, will be assigned directly to schools throughout the state. Furthermore, an additional 17 literacy coaches, including one regional coach, will bolster an existing literacy coaching pilot program in Prince George’s County Public Schools, which will continue to receive support from philanthropic organizations.
The establishment of this statewide teacher coaching program, which was formalized by the Maryland General Assembly in 2025, underscores the state’s dedication to establishing a benchmark for educator support. The coaches are intended to offer weekly, practical assistance to teachers in schools across Maryland. The specific assignment of coaches to schools will be determined by analyzing three key data points: the performance of third-grade students on the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) in English language arts and mathematics over the past three years, the proportion of teachers holding conditional licenses, and the academic performance of students in special education and multilingual learner programs. Job opportunities for these coaching roles are available on the Maryland State Department of Education website.
