The $5.1 million project will add 4,800 square feet to the existing terminal, a move facilitated by a cooperative funding effort involving grants from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Maryland Aviation Administration, alongside contributions from Washington County Government and airport funds. Thanks to Federal and State contributions, the total cost to Washington County is only $344,000, with the remainder of costs covered by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Maryland Aviation Administration. The expansion is designed to upgrade key areas of the terminal, including ticketing counters, seating in the lobby and gate areas, and passenger amenities. New features will include a dedicated mother’s lactation room, an updated vending area, and potentially leasable spaces for future food and beverage services. Additionally, the expansion will incorporate more airline ticket counters, office spaces, storage, and support facilities, aiming to improve passenger flow and increase seating capacity in the holdroom. A key aspect of the project is ensuring full Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, thereby improving accessibility for all travelers.
Beyond the terminal building itself, Hagerstown Regional Airport is also expanding its aircraft parking capabilities. The airport plans to increase the number of parking positions adjacent to the terminal from one to two, and has acquired additional ground support equipment necessary to accommodate narrow-body airliner services. This strategic enhancement of infrastructure is intended to support the operational needs of current and future airlines serving the region. Furthermore, the new terminal space being constructed could be adapted in subsequent projects to better meet the support space requirements of new airlines, potentially opening avenues for future growth at HGR.
Residents and travelers using Hagerstown Regional Airport can anticipate a more comfortable and functional travel experience as these improvements are realized. The expansion signifies a commitment to not only modernizing the airport’s appearance but also to increasing its operational capacity and accessibility. The new amenities and expanded services aim to make HGR a more convenient and attractive option for air travel in the region.
