According to the information submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a process deviation during the manufacturing of the battery cells may lead to the formation of lithium plating. This plating can potentially cause an internal cell short, increasing the risk of the HV battery overheating, emitting smoke, and even igniting a fire. The primary component of concern is the battery cells, manufactured by Shandong Geely Sunwoda Power Battery Co. in China.
Volvo Cars first became aware of potential overheating issues with HV battery cells outside the United States in July 2025. This prompted an internal investigation, which was subsequently escalated to the Critical Concern Action Process (CCAP). Following a technical investigation by the Critical Concern Management Team (CCMT), the issue was deemed potentially critical, leading to the decision to prepare for a safety recall. On December 26, 2025, the CCMT formally decided to issue a safety recall due to an elevated risk to motor vehicle safety.
The company has confirmed that there have been no warranty claims or field service reports related to this specific defect within the United States. However, as a precautionary measure, Volvo Cars will be implementing a field service action to replace the affected battery modules. The remedy component features an improved part where the production process has been modified to control the gap between the anode and cathode in the battery cell, thus addressing the identified variation. Production was corrected to incorporate this improvement on April 3, 2025.
Owners of the affected 2025 Volvo EX30 vehicles will be notified about the recall. The manufacturer advises owners of vehicles with this defect to “Do Not Drive” and to “Park Outside” until the remedy is implemented. Consumers can expect to be able to check if their vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is searchable for this recall starting February 23, 2026. Dealer notification was planned for February 20, 2026, with owner notifications to follow.
For owners who may have previously paid for repairs related to this issue before receiving official notification, Volvo Cars has outlined a reimbursement program. Further details regarding the reimbursement process and eligibility can be obtained by contacting the Volvo Customer Care Center. The company also requests that current owners assist in updating their records if they no longer own the vehicle.
Owners with questions are encouraged to contact their local Volvo retailer. If further assistance is needed, Volvo Customer Care can be reached at 1800 Volvo Place, Mahwah, NJ 07430, or by phone at 1-800-458-1552, available daily from 6 am to 9 pm. Additionally, inquiries can be made online through the Volvo customer support website at https://volvo.custhelp.com/app/homeV3.
