According to the preliminary investigation by troopers from the Maryland State Police North East Barrack, the fatal collision took place shortly after 1 p.m. at the intersection of Maryland Route 213 and Leeds Road. Two motorcycles, a Kawasaki and a Yamaha, were traveling southbound on Route 213. For reasons that are still under investigation, the rider of the Kawasaki attempted to pass the Yamaha. During this maneuver, the Kawasaki reportedly struck the left side of the Yamaha.
The 17-year-old female was a passenger on the Kawasaki. Both the driver of the Kawasaki, a 19-year-old male, and the female passenger were transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Tragically, the female passenger was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The driver of the Yamaha motorcycle involved in the collision was reported to have sustained no injuries.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The roadway was closed for over an hour to facilitate the investigation. This incident serves as a somber reminder for motorcyclists to prioritize safety. State Police urge motorcyclists to ride defensively, always assuming that other drivers may not see them, to ensure they are visible, and to wear appropriate protective gear. Motorists are also reminded to remain vigilant, share the road responsibly, and to exercise caution by looking twice for motorcycles.
