A fire that tragically resulted in the death of a 62-year-old man in Chaptico, Maryland, is currently under joint investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Maryland State Police. The blaze, which occurred late Tuesday night, prompted a significant response from local fire departments after 911 callers reported a barn fire with a person trapped inside.

Upon arrival at the scene on Roosevelt Boulevard, firefighters encountered a substantial 50-by-100-foot barn engulfed in flames. Family members present confirmed that an individual remained inside the structure. After successfully bringing the fire under control, firefighters discovered the body of a deceased male within the barn. Investigators have learned that the victim had entered the barn earlier in the evening with the intention of jump-starting a vehicle. He had reportedly contacted a family member inside the residence, requesting a fire extinguisher. By the time the family member went outside, the fire had rapidly spread throughout the barn. During an attempt to reach the victim, the family member sustained burns to their hands and was subsequently transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center for medical attention. The victim was located near a vehicle within the barn and was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency personnel. The deceased has been preliminarily identified as the 62-year-old homeowner. The body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for positive identification and to determine the official cause of death. The origin and cause of the fire itself remain subjects of the ongoing investigation. A collaborative inquiry by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and law enforcement is standard protocol for all incidents involving a fatality.
