The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the reinstatement of 56 United States Coast Guard members who were previously discharged for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine. This decision, which includes provisions for back pay, marks a reversal of policies enacted under the previous administration concerning vaccine mandates for military personnel.

The reinstated service members will have their records adjusted to reflect continuous active service from their original discharge date through their reinstatement. These individuals may also be eligible for back pay, allowances, bonus payments, and adjustments to rank and seniority, as determined by the Coast Guard, in accordance with a recent executive order.

The COVID-19 vaccine mandate for all service members was initially issued by the Secretary of Defense in August 2021. This mandate was rescinded in January 2023. The U.S. Coast Guard implemented its own similar mandate, which was also rescinded in January 2023. In January 2025, President Donald Trump issued an executive order that provided a pathway for the reinstatement of service members discharged due to their refusal to comply with the vaccine mandate.

Following this executive order, a three-member panel reviewed recommendations, leading to the decision by the Board for Correction of Military Records of the Coast Guard to reinstate these 56 individuals. This action is presented as a measure to correct perceived injustices and uphold personal freedoms for service members.
