Prospective candidates interested in running for Mayor or Town Council can submit their certificates of nomination at the Town Office. The office is open Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:00 AM and 3:30 PM. The final opportunity to file for candidacy will be on Monday, April 6, 2026, with the filing window closing at 4:30 PM. To qualify for Mayor or Council, the candidate must have been a resident of Smithsburg for one year prior to the election, and be a qualified voter for the town.

Should it be required depending on the number of candidates, a Primary Election will be conducted on Monday, April 27, 2026. Polling locations will be open for voting from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM on that day. The General Election, where the final victors will be determined, is scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, 2026, also with voting hours from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

The Town of Smithsburg operates under a government structure that includes a Mayor and five Council Members, with each elected official serving a four-year term. Currently, Mayor Donald L.
