Smithsburg, Maryland residents are being informed about the upcoming election cycle for key town positions, according to information released by the town government. The filing period for candidates seeking to serve as Mayor or one of two Town Council Members is now open, with a firm deadline approaching. This election cycle will shape the leadership of Smithsburg for the coming years, impacting local governance and community development.

Prospective candidates interested in running for Mayor or Town Council can submit their certificates of nomination at the Town Office. The office is open Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:00 AM and 3:30 PM. The final opportunity to file for candidacy will be on Monday, April 6, 2026, with the filing window closing at 4:30 PM. To qualify for Mayor or Council, the candidate must have been a resident of Smithsburg for one year prior to the election, and be a qualified voter for the town.
Should it be required depending on the number of candidates, a Primary Election will be conducted on Monday, April 27, 2026. Polling locations will be open for voting from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM on that day. The General Election, where the final victors will be determined, is scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, 2026, also with voting hours from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
The Town of Smithsburg operates under a government structure that includes a Mayor and five Council Members, with each elected official serving a four-year term. Currently, Mayor Donald L. Souders, whose term expires in 2026, holds the mayoral office. The Town Council is comprised of Cathie McCormick, Jim Fritsch, Jon Snyder, Evonne “Bonnie” Renard, and David Dan. Council Members McCormick and Fritsch also have terms expiring in 2026, while Council Members Snyder, Renard, and Dan are serving terms that conclude in 2028.
The Mayor and Town Council convene for their regular monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of each month. These meetings commence at 7:00 PM and are held in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. In addition to the regular sessions, the council also holds Special Sessions on the third Tuesday of every month, also beginning at 7:00 PM. These meetings provide opportunities for residents to stay informed about town affairs and to voice their concerns.
This election is a crucial opportunity for Smithsburg residents to participate in their local democracy by either running for office or casting their vote. The individuals elected will be responsible for making decisions that directly affect the community, including local ordinances, budgeting, and town services. Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the candidates and the issues to make informed choices.
