SMITHSBURG, MD – The Town of Smithsburg will hold its elections for Mayor and two town council seats on Tuesday May 10th, between 7 AM and 8 PM. Elections will be held at Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Company.
The Town Government is comprised of the Mayor and five-(5) Council Members.
Each elected official serves a term of four-(4) years.
Town elections are non-partisan.
Members whose seats are up for re-election include:
-Mayor Donnie Souders (Acting Mayor)
-Councilmember Jim Fritsch
-Councilmember Cassandra Weaver (not running for re-election)
In addition to incumbent council members, the following are also running for Town Council:
-Roberto Gonzalez
-Ken Carpenter
-Jessica Warner
-Jon Snyder
Acting Mayor Donnie Souders is running unopposed, unless a write-in candidate attempts to campaign against him.
If Acting Mayor Souders wins, there will one vacant council seat with a term expiration of 2024, and that seat is would need to be filled through selection by the council members after 2022 elections.
While the deadline for candidate filing has passed (April 4th), write-in candidates may still submit no later than 4:30 PM on Wednesday, May 4th.
Per the town charter, certificates of nomination for write-in candidates for a general election shall be filed under oath with the Town Clerk-Treasurer, acting for the Board of Supervisors of Elections for the Town, during normal Town office hours, no later than 4:30 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to that general election.
Since there are less than 7 council candidates and less than 3 mayor candidates, a primary election will not be held, and all candidates will automatically advance to the general election on May 10th.
