Beginning tonight and extending through Monday morning, much of Maryland will experience a Cold Weather Advisory. Frigid temperatures are forecast to persist, with wind chill values potentially dropping below zero statewide late Saturday night and into Sunday morning. This is particularly concerning for the lower Eastern Shore, where an Extreme Cold Weather Watch has already been issued. Such dangerously low temperatures increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone exposed to the elements without adequate protection, especially during extended periods outdoors.
The forecast indicates that these prolonged cold conditions will continue even as a slight moderation in temperatures is expected next week. Compounding the cold, ice coverage is expanding across tidal waters, including the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River, as well as in area inlets. This expansion is anticipated to continue into early next week due to the persistent Arctic air mass. Freezing spray is also likely to occur over open waters, impacting maritime activities.
A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Somerset and Worcester counties from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon. This watch signals the potential for blizzard conditions, characterized by low visibility and strong winds, particularly along the Maryland beaches, including Ocean City and Assateague Island. Accumulating snow is expected to begin as early as Friday night in the lower Eastern Shore and southern Maryland, with the possibility of the snow system moving northward towards the I-95 metropolitan areas by Saturday. The most significant snowfall is anticipated across southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore, south of the Queen Anne’s Highway and US 50 corridor. Snowfall is expected to taper off late Saturday night into Sunday morning as the system departs.
Residents are urged to take proactive steps to protect their water lines from freezing and to prepare for potential power outages, which can be exacerbated by severe winter weather. The duration of the cold and the potential for significant snowfall necessitate a cautious approach to outdoor activities and travel plans throughout the weekend.
