The Chad Pregracke was navigating southbound on the Mississippi River, pushing 34 loaded barges, when barge PTC 706, situated at the front of the tow, rapidly sank. This sudden sinking caused the entire tow to break apart. The accident led to damage to five other barges within the tow, with estimated damages totaling $2 million. Fortunately, the report indicates that no injuries occurred and no pollution was reported as a result of the incident.
According to the NTSB’s findings, the probable cause of the sinking of barge PTC 706 and the subsequent breakup of the tow was attributed to the barge being down by the bow. The report states that the specific reason for this condition remains undetermined. However, the forward momentum of the tow ultimately drove the bow-heavy barge underwater, initiating the chain of events that led to the tow breaking apart. The NTSB encourages interested parties to visit their investigation page for additional details and lessons learned from this incident.
