Maxey had previously pleaded guilty in 2024 to a single count of distributing fentanyl. As part of his plea agreement, Maxey acknowledged selling approximately 26 grams of fentanyl for $18,000 to a confidential source. This quantity of the drug is equivalent to more than 13,000 potentially fatal doses. The investigation into Maxey’s activities was a collaborative effort involving the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Pocono Mountain Regional Police, the Scranton Police Department, and the District Attorney’s Offices of Lackawanna and Monroe Counties. Assistant United States Attorney James M. Buchanan led the prosecution of the case. This prosecution is part of a broader, district-wide initiative aimed at combating the widespread issue of heroin use and distribution. The Heroin Initiative, spearheaded by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, focuses on identifying and prosecuting individuals involved in heroin trafficking within the Middle District of Pennsylvania, working in conjunction with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
