Two Maryland high school seniors have been chosen to represent the state at the upcoming 64th Annual U.S. Senate Youth Program (USSYP) in Washington D.C. According to the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), O’Marie Barnes, a senior at Crossland High School in Prince George’s County and the current Student Member of the State Board of Education, and Jeremy Wong, a senior at Reservoir High School in Howard County, will participate in the program from March 7 to March 14. This significant opportunity allows two delegates from each state to gain direct experience in the workings of the American democratic process.

The U.S. Senate Youth Program, sponsored by the U.S. Senate and financially supported by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, aims to provide young leaders with an in-depth understanding of government and public affairs. Selected delegates and their alternates are chosen by state departments of education following nominations from teachers and principals, with the final selection confirmed by the chief state school officer. In addition to Barnes and Wong, two Maryland students have been named as alternates: Jordan McDaniel Salkeld from Towson High School in Baltimore County Public Schools and Foresight Oluwamitoke Ogungbe from Eastern Technical High School, also in Baltimore County Public Schools.

During their week in Washington D.C., O’Marie Barnes and Jeremy Wong will each receive a $10,000 college scholarship. They will join approximately 104 other student leaders from across the nation to engage in intensive study and discussions. The program is designed to offer delegates direct interaction with senators, cabinet members, and other prominent national leaders, providing a unique insight into the complexities of federal government and public service. The selection of Barnes and Wong highlights their demonstrated leadership, civic engagement, and academic achievements, reflecting positively on their respective schools and communities within Maryland.
