Chris Burnett, a former Marine Corps lawyer recently returned from active duty, has recently discussed his candidacy for Maryland’s 6th Congressional District in an interview with Radio Free Hub City. Drawing on his extensive legal and leadership experience within the military, Burnett aims to bring a problem-solving approach to Washington, focusing on issues of national security, economic prosperity, and government accountability. He asserts that his background in federal law and policy uniquely positions him to address the complex challenges facing the district and the nation.

Burnett, who is a resident of the 6th Congressional District, stated his motivation for entering politics stems from a desire to continue serving his country after 24 years in the Marine Corps. He has pledged to serve no more than ten years in Congress, signing a term limits pledge, and has also committed to not trading stocks while in office, aiming to prevent personal financial gain from his legislative position. This commitment to public service over personal ambition is a cornerstone of his campaign.

A significant concern for Burnett is the integrity of the electoral process, particularly regarding redistricting. He views the current system as a political game that marginalizes voices and undermines free and fair elections. Burnett advocates for a standardized redistricting process that would ideally be perceived as fair by both parties, preventing it from becoming a partisan advantage.

His platform is built on addressing the concerns of constituents across the political spectrum, advocating for moderate solutions to pressing issues. Burnett highlights his experience in the Marine Corps, which includes five deployments, primarily to Iraq, with his most recent mission in 2020 focused on counter-ISIS operations. He also served with a Marine expeditionary unit in the Western Pacific, gaining experience in international operations. Beyond his legal duties, Burnett served as acting Executive Officer of a marine expeditionary unit, demonstrating his leadership and planning capabilities in non-legal roles. He feels compelled to actively participate in public discourse, stating he “just couldn’t sit on the sidelines of this fight” and emphasizing the need for accountability, which he believes has been eroded through compromise and entitlement.

“I just couldn’t sit on the sidelines of this fight,” said Burnett.

Burnett also outlined some of the challenges veterans face when transitioning to civilian political careers, citing difficulties in building name recognition due to frequent military moves and the financial strain on military families that can hinder self-funding. He notes that candidates often lack the necessary support networks and funding to compete effectively, especially against well-funded incumbents.

Economic concerns within Maryland’s 6th District are a strong focus for Burnett, who advocates for public-private partnerships to foster strategic growth in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and advanced manufacturing. He sees these sectors as not only economic drivers but also crucial for national security, advocating for federal investment in the necessary infrastructure to support these advancements. Burnett believes Maryland’s strong workforce makes it an attractive location for such industries, but emphasizes the need for strategic planning rather than reactive measures. He points to issues like the development of data centers in Frederick as examples of where residents’ needs are not being adequately addressed, leading to conflicts over land use and infrastructure. Burnett suggests that instead of relying on potentially contentious solutions like eminent domain for power lines, the focus should shift to encouraging the development of small modular nuclear reactors for data centers. He argues that the public’s apprehension towards nuclear power has hindered its adoption, despite its successful use in military applications like aircraft carriers and submarines, and believes this technology could provide a cleaner alternative to diesel generators.

In line with this economic focus, Burnett recently unveiled a proposal which aims to revitalize Western Maryland by creating a significant hub for advanced industries and addressing critical infrastructure needs.

“We can forge our own Innovation Corridor right here in Western Maryland. We have the land, the people, and the work ethic,” Burnett said in his press release announcing the proposal. “This corridor will create new jobs while bringing better roads and reliable, affordable energy. Instead of watching our jobs disappear to Virginia or seeing high-paying opportunities go to California or overseas, Western Maryland communities can play a bigger role in the AI and quantum revolution happening in Northern Virginia and D.C., bringing those opportunities home. Furthermore, addressing the affordability crisis isn’t about government handouts, it’s about creating opportunity. The Western Maryland Innovation Corridor delivers both. Our goal is to connect Western Maryland beginning in 2026 and for decades to come, much like the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal did in the 1850 jobs.”

The Western Maryland Innovation Corridor, as it is named, envisions a comprehensive public-private partnership to improve major roadways and infrastructure without any new taxes. This initiative is designed to attract businesses in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductor manufacturing, and advanced energy, potentially transforming the region into a leading center for technological development. A key component involves rebuilding and enhancing the American Legion Bridge, I-270, I-70, and I-68. Under this proposal, these routes would feature minimal tolls, with High Occupancy Vehicles (HOV-3+) always exempt. Furthermore, the project aims to integrate clean energy solutions by requiring new data centers and other energy-intensive companies to co-locate with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The surplus zero-carbon power generated from these SMRs is projected to decrease residential electricity bills across the region by an estimated 10% to 15%.

His campaign priorities, as outlined on his website, center on “Peace, Prosperity, and Protection.” Specifically, Burnett aims to reduce taxes, cut regulations, and foster private sector growth to create high-paying jobs and support vocational training. He also emphasizes support for law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a secure border, and strengthened supply chains, with a commitment to enforcing existing laws. Other key platform points include tackling the rising cost of living, protecting parental rights in education, expanding access to quality healthcare, cutting government waste, and rebuilding infrastructure. Burnett is a firm supporter of a strong military and foreign policy to ensure national security and advocates for prioritizing the needs of military personnel, their families, and veterans.
