The initiative, a collaboration between state agencies including the Department of Human Services, Department of Information Technology, and Department of Health, along with Code for America, addresses long-standing concerns about the complexity of accessing public assistance. Previously, individuals often faced extensive paperwork and multiple office visits to apply for different benefits. The One Application is designed to eliminate these hurdles, allowing eligible families to apply for a range of services through a single online portal accessible from computers or smartphones.
The streamlined system has reportedly led to a significant increase in online applications. In the three months following its implementation, the average number of monthly online applications rose by nearly 40%. Approximately 111,000 new individuals have received SNAP benefits after applying through the One Application. The platform was also utilized by over 56,000 Marylanders during a federal government shutdown.
The typical user now takes an average of 27 minutes to complete an application for multiple benefits, a considerable reduction from the hours or days previously required. This enhanced accessibility is expected to help families more readily obtain support for necessities like food, healthcare, and energy costs, aligning with the current administration’s goal of reducing child poverty by improving access to economic benefits. The Department of Health has indicated that this makes quality, affordable healthcare more accessible, contributing to better health outcomes for working families.
Residents are encouraged to visit MarylandBenefits.gov to utilize the One Application for their benefit needs.
