Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. has initiated two separate recalls affecting certain 2026 Volkswagen Atlas, 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, and 2023-2024 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles. The recalls address potential safety risks related to improperly installed wheel bolts and a defect in the high-voltage battery system, respectively. Owners of affected vehicles are strongly advised not to drive them and to contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer immediately.

The first recall, pertaining to the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas, 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, and a single 2026 Volkswagen ID.4 model, concerns the potential installation of incorrect wheel bolts during production. A total of 27 vehicles are potentially affected by this issue, with an estimated 40.7% exhibiting the defect. The affected Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models were manufactured between October 30, 2025, and November 4, 2025, and October 30, 2025, and November 3, 2025, respectively. The single ID.4 involved was produced on November 3, 2025. Volkswagen identified the problem following an assembly line observation on October 31, 2025, which led to an internal investigation determining a parts mixing error at the supplier. The safety risk associated with this defect is that if the incorrect wheel bolts loosen while the vehicle is in motion, a wheel could detach, significantly increasing the risk of a crash. Drivers may notice warning signs such as a rattling noise, vibration, or a change in vehicle handling if the bolts begin to loosen. Due to the severity of this risk, Volkswagen has issued a “STOP DRIVE ADVISORY” for these vehicles. Owners are instructed to not drive their vehicles and to arrange for transport to a dealership for inspection and repair. The remedy will involve dealers inspecting and replacing the wheel bolts at no cost to the owner, as the affected vehicles are within their New Vehicle Limited Warranty period. Dealer notification is scheduled to begin on December 5, 2025, with owner notifications expected by January 30, 2026. VINs will be searchable in the NHTSA recall database starting December 5, 2025.

The second recall addresses a defect in the high-voltage (HV) battery system of 311 units of the 2023-2024 Volkswagen ID.4 models manufactured between September 16, 2022, and September 22, 2024. This recall stems from the identification of a quality deviation by the HV battery supplier, SK Battery America Inc., where certain battery cells within a production period may have misaligned electrodes. This misaligned electrode condition could lead to a fire under specific circumstances. Volkswagen was first alerted to a thermal event involving an ID.4 in Illinois in January 2024, with subsequent thermal events reported in California and Utah throughout 2024 and 2025. Investigations into these events, involving both Volkswagen and SK Battery America, ultimately led to the identification of the misaligned electrode issue in late September 2025. As a precautionary measure, Volkswagen is advising owners of potentially affected ID.4s to limit their high-voltage battery system to an 80% state of charge, avoid using Level 3 DC chargers, and to park their vehicles outdoors immediately after charging, avoiding overnight charging indoors. Dealers will replace the affected HV battery cell modules at no cost to owners, as the vehicles are covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Similar to the wheel bolt recall, dealer notification is slated for December 5, 2025, with owner notifications to follow by January 30, 2026. VIN lookups will also be available from December 5, 2025.
