The U.S. Department of Justice has initiated federal lawsuits against six states for their alleged failure to provide their statewide voter registration lists when requested, as mandated by federal law. The states facing legal action are Delaware, Maryland, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The department asserts that accurate voter rolls are fundamental to the integrity of elections and that noncompliance with basic voter list maintenance procedures undermines this principle.

The Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department has taken this step, emphasizing that federal election laws are in place to ensure every American citizen can vote freely and fairly. By withholding voter lists, these states are seen as obstructing the department’s efforts to maintain accurate voter records, ensure every vote is counted equally, and foster public confidence in election outcomes. The department views this as a direct defiance of federal civil rights laws and has stated its commitment to continued litigation until states adhere to fundamental election safeguards.
While the Maryland State Government has not yet issued a statement on the lawsuit, one local political candidate with legal experience reached out to express his thoughts on the matter. “I continue to support every vote being counted to ensure transparency and accountability in America’s electoral system”, said Chris Burnett, Congressional candidate for Maryland CD6 in a statement emailed to Radio Free Hub City. “This lawsuit promotes transparency in our electoral system to help ensure that cheating isn’t occurring. Furthermore, this isn’t a Democrat versus Republican issue, this is an American issue.” Chris Burnett is a retired Marine Corps officer and national security lawyer.
These lawsuits are based on the Attorney General’s authority, granted by Congress, to enforce the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and the Help America Vote Act (HAVA). These laws are designed to ensure that states implement and maintain effective voter registration and list maintenance programs. Additionally, the Attorney General has the authority under the Civil Rights Act of 1960 to demand the production, inspection, and analysis of statewide voter registration lists.
