The incident occurred when a mother was walking with her infant son and their dog. According to reports from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Jaaskelainen confronted the mother regarding the dog not being on a leash. During this altercation, Jaaskelainen allegedly threw coffee at the mother, the baby, and the family dog. Following the incident, Jaaskelainen was taken into custody and transported to the Volusia County Jail.
ICE lodged the detainer with the Volusia County Jail on November 15, 2025, indicating their intent to take custody of Jaaskelainen upon her release from local custody. Reports suggest Jaaskelainen has been residing in the U.S. without legal status since entering on April 17, 1999, with a tourist visa that required her departure by July 16, 1999. This would mean she has allegedly remained in the country illegally for approximately 26 years.
