An investigation into a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections linked to large, brown, cage-free “sunshine/omega-3 golden” yolk eggs sourced from Country Eggs, LLC, has been completed, with the outbreak now considered over. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in conjunction with state and local health authorities, were involved in the inquiry. The outbreak, which primarily affected individuals with illnesses beginning between January 7, 2025, and August 14, 2025, resulted in 105 reported cases across 14 states. Of those who became ill and provided information, 38 individuals reported consuming eggs or egg-containing dishes prior to their symptoms. The illnesses ranged in severity, with 19 hospitalizations reported. Fortunately, no deaths were attributed to this particular Salmonella strain.
Following epidemiological data gathered by the CDC, the FDA conducted an inspection at Country Eggs, LLC. During this inspection, environmental samples were collected, and three of these samples tested positive for Salmonella that genetically matched the strain responsible for the outbreak. The firm is currently working with the FDA to implement corrective actions.
The recalled eggs were identified as large, brown, cage-free “sunshine/omega-3 golden” yolk eggs, distributed under the brand names Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho, Nijiya Markets, and Country Eggs. These products were sold in California and Nevada between June 16 and July 9, 2025. The packaging may bear carton code No. CA-7695 and sell-by dates ranging from July 1, 2025, to September 18, 2025. In addition to retail sales, these eggs were also supplied in bulk for foodservice.
Consumers who may still possess these recalled eggs are advised to discard them safely. It is crucial to thoroughly clean and sanitize any surfaces, containers, or utensils that may have come into contact with the recalled eggs to prevent the risk of cross-contamination. Handwashing with hot, soapy water, along with diligent cleaning of food preparation areas, remains a key recommendation for preventing the spread of Salmonella.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection typically appear within 12 to 72 hours of consuming contaminated food and can last for four to seven days. Common symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Infants, young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of developing severe illness. Anyone experiencing these symptoms after potential exposure to the recalled eggs should seek medical attention and consult their healthcare provider.
The FDA emphasizes the importance of safe egg handling practices. Consumers are encouraged to review the agency’s guidance on buying, storing, and preparing eggs to further minimize risks. The investigation’s completion means that efforts to identify and remove the contaminated product from the market have concluded, but ongoing vigilance in food safety practices is essential.
