The safety concern stems from the design of the seatbelt anchor pretensioner assembly, which in the affected Mustang models is in direct contact with the carpet and underlayment. This proximity allows the carpet and underlayment to become wet, particularly in environments where road salt is used during winter months. The salt water can saturate the material and remain in contact with the pretensioner cable, leading to corrosion. While there are no immediate warnings for this condition, the potential for reduced restraint system performance in a collision poses a significant safety risk. The vehicles included in this recall were sold or registered in numerous states across the U.S. that experience corrosive conditions, including Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, as well as the District of Columbia.

Ford has outlined a remedy program for affected owners. Vehicle owners will receive notification by mail and will be instructed to bring their Mustang to a Ford or Lincoln dealership for inspection and repair. At the dealership, technicians will trim and remove local sections of the carpet and underlayment that are in direct contact with the driver and front passenger seatbelt anchor pretensioner cables, following specific technical instructions. Additionally, the driver and seatbelt anchor pretensioner cables will be inspected for corrosion. If corrosion is identified, the dealership will replace the entire anchor pretensioner assembly at no cost to the owner. The remedy components will be free from corrosion and water, and the trimmed carpet assembly will prevent direct contact with the pretensioner cable when wet.

Ford expects to notify dealerships about the recall on September 17, 2025. Interim owner notifications are scheduled to begin mailing on September 22, 2025, and conclude by September 26, 2025. The mailing of remedy owner notification letters is anticipated to commence on January 1, 2026, and will be completed by March 31, 2026. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) are expected to be searchable for recall eligibility starting September 17, 2025. Owners can also contact Ford’s toll-free line at 1-866-436-7332 or their local Ford or Lincoln dealer to obtain specific information about whether their vehicle is affected by this recall.
