Established in April 2017, the Good Wolf Treatment Court was initiated to address the significant impact of the opioid epidemic on Franklin County. This specialized court functions as a collaborative initiative involving the probation department, local law enforcement agencies, mental health services, and treatment counselors. It provides eligible criminal defendants with a demanding and structured alternative to incarceration, focusing on the promotion of sobriety, sustained recovery, truthfulness, and personal accountability.
To be considered for the program, individuals must first undergo a screening process and receive a recommendation from the Franklin County District Attorney’s office. Following this, they are required to complete a drug and alcohol assessment administered by a clinical provider. Participants must also acknowledge responsibility for their criminal actions and agree to a sentencing plan that may incorporate both jail time and court-ordered treatment.
The structure of the Good Wolf Treatment Court mandates that participants attend court appearances every two weeks to facilitate close monitoring of their progress. Fulfillment of community service obligations is a mandatory condition for program completion. Central to the program’s philosophy are the principles of honesty and accountability. Participants are subject to a system of incentives for positive behavior and sanctions for infractions, directly linked to their conduct throughout the program.
Since its inception, 138 individuals have entered the Good Wolf Treatment Court. The upcoming graduation will bring the total number of program completers to 46, reflecting the program’s stringent requirements and the inherent difficulties individuals face during their recovery journey. The continued success of the program underscores its effectiveness in combining accountability, active engagement, honesty, comprehensive treatment, and life-altering changes to not only save lives but also to reduce the financial burdens associated with prosecution and incarceration.
