The U.S. Coast Guard, through its enhanced Operation Pacific Viper, has successfully intercepted more than 100,000 pounds of cocaine in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This significant interdiction effort, initiated in early August, represents a substantial surge in maritime law enforcement aimed at disrupting the flow of illegal narcotics and combating human smuggling operations before they reach American shores. This aggressive counter-narcotics initiative is designed to target and dismantle drug cartels and criminal organizations operating in Latin America. The Department of Homeland Security has highlighted Operation Pacific Viper as a critical strategy in disrupting these illicit activities and sending a strong message to foreign drug traffickers. The Coast Guard’s efforts in cutting off the supply of these dangerous drugs are considered vital in saving American lives and reinforcing national security objectives.
The achievements under Operation Pacific Viper are notable, particularly in their speed and volume. In August, the operation contributed to the U.S. Coast Guard’s largest-ever drug offload in history, with the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Hamilton alone seizing over 76,000 pounds of illegal drugs. This substantial offload, valued at $473 million, comprised approximately 61,740 pounds of cocaine and an additional 14,400 pounds of marijuana, underscoring the scale of trafficking being addressed.
The Coast Guard’s sustained presence and accelerated counter-narcotics operations in the Eastern Pacific are a testament to its commitment to interdicting illicit substances. Working in conjunction with partners and allies, the maritime force is actively patrolling known drug smuggling routes. By leveraging advanced capabilities and the Coast Guard’s unique law enforcement authorities, the operation aims to dismantle transnational criminal networks and prevent harmful drugs from reaching U.S. communities. The success of seizing 100,000 pounds marks a significant milestone, with ongoing efforts to build upon this momentum.
