U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has announced the apprehension of four individuals in Portland, Oregon, who allegedly aimed laser pointers at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) helicopter. The actions taken by these individuals are described as extremely hazardous, posing significant risks to the aircraft’s crew and public safety. Aiming a laser at an aircraft is a federal offense, and the investigation determined the source of the laser strike to be a nearby residence. A subsequent search warrant executed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) led to the arrests of the four individuals residing at the property where the laser originated.

During the investigation, it was discovered that two of the arrested individuals have previous encounters with law enforcement. One suspect, identified as Diogenes Albores-Suchiapa, a national of Mexico, has prior arrests for unlawful possession of methamphetamine and criminal trespass in the second degree in Gresham, Oregon. He has also been apprehended by CBP on three separate occasions for immigration violations. Another individual, Andres Brian Lopez-Labra, also from Mexico, was previously arrested by CBP for unlawful entry and more recently by the Oregon State Police for driving under the influence. Benito Zamora-Alvarez, another Mexican national, claims to have been in the United States unlawfully since October 1994. Hector Miranda Mendoza, also identified as an illegal alien from Mexico, was the fourth individual taken into custody. These arrests highlight a concerning trend of increased attacks against law enforcement personnel.
