A tragic development has occurred in Leesburg, Virginia, where an 8-month-old girl who was the victim of an assault on September 17, 2025, has died from her injuries. According to an update from the Leesburg Police Department, the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Alvaro Mejia Ayala of Leesburg, has been arrested and is facing additional charges, including murder, following the infant’s death.

Ayala was initially apprehended on September 17 and charged with strangulation. He is currently being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. In collaboration with the Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, further charges are pending as the investigation continues and forensic evidence is processed. The assault took place in the 0 block of Hancock Place NE.
The Leesburg Police Department expressed the profound impact of this case on both the community and the department. Their thoughts and deepest sympathies are extended to the victim’s family during this exceptionally difficult time. The department also recognized the efforts of first responders and medical professionals who worked to save the child’s life, as well as the assistance provided by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in apprehending the suspect and the support from the Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
