Approximately 481,000 Anker power banks have been recalled due to a fire and burn hazard, according to an announcement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The lithium-ion batteries within these portable charging devices can overheat, posing a significant risk to consumers. The recall impacts power banks with model numbers A1647, A1652, A1257, A1681, and A1689, which are designed to charge smartphones, laptops, and tablets with varying wattages. The “Anker” brand is visible on the front of the devices, while the specific model number is located on the back or side.

Consumers who own one of the affected Anker power banks are urged to immediately cease using the product. To receive a remedy, individuals must visit Anker’s designated recall page at https://www.anker.com/rc2506 to confirm their product’s serial number and register for the recall. Upon verification, Anker Innovations Limited will provide consumers with a full cash refund or an Anker gift card, which can be redeemed for various Anker products. To complete the recall process, customers will be required to submit a photograph of their recalled power bank. This photograph must clearly display the model number, serial number, the consumer’s name, the date the photo was taken, and the word “recalled” written on the power bank with a permanent marker. Anker will then furnish consumers with instructions on how to properly return or dispose of the recalled units.

It is crucial to note that these recalled lithium-ion batteries should not be disposed of in regular household trash, general recycling bins, or standard used battery recycling containers found at retail locations. Due to their potential fire risk, these batteries require special disposal methods. Consumers are advised to contact their municipal household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center to inquire about accepted disposal of recalled lithium-ion batteries. It is recommended to call ahead and confirm if they accept these specific items before bringing them in. If the local HHW center cannot accept the battery, consumers should seek further guidance from their municipality.

The recall comes after Anker Innovations Limited reported 33 incidents involving fire and explosion. These incidents have resulted in four reports of minor burn injuries and one instance of substantial property damage. The affected power banks were sold nationwide at retailers such as Best Buy and Target, as well as online through platforms including Amazon.com, AliExpress.com, ebay.com, Walmart.com, and Tiktok. The sale period for these products spanned from August 2023 through June 2025, with prices ranging from $30 to $50.
