The initial alarm sounded shortly after midnight when an employee noticed smoke emanating from the restaurant’s basement. Firefighters from the Singerly Volunteer Fire Company, along with crews from neighboring departments, responded promptly and managed to bring the first stage of the fire under control within approximately 30 minutes. Deputy State Fire Marshals later determined that the fire’s origin was accidental, stemming from an electrical fault in a basement panel. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during this initial response, and the scene was cleared by 3:00 a.m.
However, the situation dramatically worsened just before 7:00 a.m. when firefighters were called back to the establishment. Flames had reignited, encountering heavy fire conditions throughout the entire building and quickly escalating the incident to a four-alarm fire. Firefighting efforts were intensified, with significant support arriving from departments in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and other parts of Maryland. Crews worked for several hours to gain control of the renewed blaze.
Officials noted that while thorough overhaul procedures are employed to mitigate the risk of rekindles, hidden embers can sometimes remain within building structures, smoldering for extended periods before flaring up again. These situations, though uncommon, can occur despite the diligent efforts of firefighters to extinguish all sources of heat. Investigators also confirmed that the restaurant was not equipped with essential fire safety systems, including smoke alarms, sprinklers, or a fire alarm system. The investigation into the exact sequence of events and the contributing factors to the fire’s progression is ongoing.
