A Leesburg resident has been arrested and charged with strangulation in connection with an assault case involving an infant, according to an announcement from the Leesburg Police Department. The incident began when authorities responded to a report of an unresponsive infant, who is currently in critical condition at a local hospital.

The Leesburg Police Department’s investigation into the incident, which commenced on the morning of September 17, 2025, revealed that the infant had been subjected to an assault. The individual identified as the suspect reportedly fled the scene on foot prior to the arrival of law enforcement officers. Working in conjunction with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were able to locate Alvaro Mejia Ayala, a 21-year-old Leesburg resident, later that afternoon in the vicinity of Meadows Lane NE. Mejia Ayala has since been charged with strangulation.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further charges may be forthcoming as more information is gathered. The Leesburg Police Department has expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in apprehending the suspect.
