Following the initial collision with the officer, the driver reportedly crashed into multiple ICE vehicles before fleeing the scene. The vehicle then proceeded into oncoming traffic, where it was involved in a further collision with a utility van. After this second crash, the individuals within the vehicle exited and attempted to flee law enforcement on foot. ICE officers present at the scene provided medical aid to the injured officer and subsequently detained the individuals. All those detained were transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation, and after being discharged, they were taken into ICE custody pending removal proceedings.
The individuals taken into custody include Henry Isaul Garcia, who is reported to have entered the United States illegally on or about March 10, 2022, near Eagle Pass, Texas. Also apprehended were Ruben Sales Garcia, who was previously removed from the U.S. in 2007 and has since reentered illegally; Marlon Gomez Hernandez, who is reported to have entered the U.S. in 2018 without authorization; and Jorge Perez Martin, who also entered the U.S. illegally on an unspecified date. The ICE officer involved in the incident is reported to be in stable condition.
This event follows an increase in reported assaults against ICE officers, with the agency noting this as the second incident within a week where an officer was injured during an arrest of an undocumented individual. The agency has pointed to actions by elected officials in what are referred to as “sanctuary” jurisdictions as contributing to an environment where such confrontations occur. Specifically, the statement references webinars and public information campaigns allegedly disseminated by some politicians, which are described as offering guidance on how to evade ICE officers. Examples cited include an event hosted by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez providing tips on avoiding arrest, a video by Dan Goldman encouraging undocumented individuals to prepare for ICE encounters, flyers and online resources from Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass offering advice on evading arrest, and guides released by California Governor Gavin Newsom on how to identify and obstruct ICE officers.
