Per a press release from Ford Motor Company, a significant safety recall has been issued for over 1.4 million vehicles across various Ford and Lincoln models due to a defect in the rearview camera system. This issue can result in the camera displaying a blank, distorted, or inverted image while in reverse, potentially obscuring the driver’s view and increasing the risk of a crash. The defect stems from a supplier’s printed circuit board header tooling, which led to lower terminal contact forces and subsequent fretting corrosion over time.

Affected vehicles include 2015-2019 Lincoln MKC (99,733 units), 2015-2017 Lincoln Navigator (25,078 units), 2019 Ford Ranger (2,551 units), 2015-2018 Ford Edge (515,004 units), 2017-2019 Ford Econoline (1,261 units), 2015-2019 Ford Mustang (365,041 units), 2015-2017 Ford Expedition (138,038 units), 2015-2019 Ford F-350 SD (79,145 units), 2016-2019 Ford Transit (7,102 units), 2016-2019 Ford F-550 SD (19,863 units), 2015-2019 Ford F-250 SD (97,781 units), 2015-2018 Ford Transit Connect (92,779 units), and 2015-2019 Ford F-450 SD (13,041 units). The total number of potentially affected vehicles in this recall is 1,456,417, with an estimated 2.7% experiencing the defect.
Ford reports that the issue was brought to their attention on April 3, 2025, following prior investigations and communications with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). As of August 13, 2025, Ford was aware of 44,123 global warranty claims related to these concerns, with the first claim dating back to May 6, 2014. Additionally, 195 vehicle owner questionnaires (VOQs) and reports of 18 accidents linked to this defect have been documented, though no injuries have been reported.
Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail and instructed to bring their cars to a Ford or Lincoln dealership for inspection and replacement of the rearview camera if necessary. This service will be provided at no charge to the consumer. The remedy involves replacing the rearview camera with a new unit featuring an updated printed circuit board header designed to prevent fretting corrosion and ensure consistent performance.
Ford has outlined a schedule for the recall process. Dealer notification is expected on September 8, 2025, and owners will begin receiving notification letters for remedy by September 22, 2025, with completion anticipated by September 28, 2025. VINs will be searchable for recall applicability starting September 8, 2025. Customers can also contact Ford’s toll-free line at 1-866-436-7332 or a local Ford or Lincoln dealer for specific vehicle information. The company advises owners to park their affected vehicles outside and to avoid driving them until the repair is completed due to the potential safety risk.
